Our impact Impact stories Rolo makes life sweeter for Heidi Heidi Robinson’s world was turned upside down 15 years ago when she developed a range of debilitating health conditions. After being an active mother, hairdresser, and equestrian, she found herself grappling with fibromyalgia, ME, a compromised immune system, long Covid, and non-epileptic seizures. “I was really active – motorcycling, horses, you name it, I was doing it,” says Heidi. As her health deteriorated, so did her mental wellbeing, struggling with depression and anxiety she found herself increasingly isolated. "I wasn’t going out and had lost all my confidence," she explains. "I didn’t want to walk or drive anywhere on my own." Enter Rolo, the Labradoodle who changed everything. Trained as a disability assistance dog by Support Dogs, Rolo has become Heidi’s constant companion and lifeline. He helps with everyday tasks, from picking up dropped items to loading the washing machine on top of providing emotional support and encouragement. “Rolo has helped me get back to being a bit more like my old self,” Heidi says. “He does get attention, which I now embrace. It’s brought me out of my shell.” The pair recently graduated from Support Dogs’ disability assistance program. “I think Support Dogs are amazing, and the work they do should get more credit” For Heidi, Rolo is more than just a dog; he's a symbol of hope and resilience. With her loyal companion by her side, she is facing the future with renewed optimism. (Photo credit: Gill Baston - Bastonelli Photography) Manage Cookie Preferences
